Book Summary:
The White Tiger is a dark, thrilling novel by Indian author Aravind Adiga, published in 2008. It won the Man Booker Prize for Fiction in the same year. The story is told through a series of letters from Balram Halwai, a poor man from rural India, to the Chinese Premier, who is visiting India. Balram's letters provide a first-person account of his rise from poverty to becoming a successful entrepreneur, all while revealing the corruption and injustice in Indian society.
The novel is set against the backdrop of India’s stark class divisions, with Balram born into a family of poverty-stricken farmers in the "Darkness" of rural India. He grows up in a village where the poor are oppressed and bound by rigid societal norms. Determined to escape his fate, Balram eventually becomes a chauffeur for a wealthy family in Delhi, working for a corrupt, upper-class couple. As he observes the disparity between the lives of the rich and the struggles of the poor, he becomes disillusioned with the system and his own role in it.
In a shocking and morally complex twist, Balram kills his employer, steals a large sum of money, and goes on to build his own business, operating a successful taxi service in Bangalore. The novel explores themes of corruption, exploitation, the quest for power, and the moral choices people make when trapped in an unjust system. Balram’s journey is both a critique of India’s social and economic inequality and a dark exploration of individual ambition and morality.
The book also questions the idea of the "Indian Dream," exposing the lengths people go to in order to break free from their social and economic circumstances.
