The Old Man and the Sea is a short novel by Ernest Hemingway, published in 1952. It tells the story of Santiago, an aging Cuban fisherman who has gone 84 days without catching a fish. Determined to end his unlucky streak, he sails far into the Gulf Stream, where he hooks a giant marlin. Over the next three days, Santiago struggles with the fish, enduring physical pain and exhaustion. Finally, he catches the marlin and ties it alongside his skiff. However, sharks are attracted to the marlin's blood, and despite Santiago's efforts to fend them off, they devour the fish, leaving only its skeleton. Santiago returns home defeated but with a renewed sense of pride and dignity.
