Book Summary :
The Hungry Tide by Amitav Ghosh is a powerful novel set in the Sundarbans, a vast network of islands, rivers, and mangrove forests in eastern India. The story brings together three very different lives that intersect in this unpredictable landscape shaped by tides and storms. Piya Roy, a young marine biologist of Indian origin but raised in America, travels to the Sundarbans to study the rare Irrawaddy dolphins. There she meets Fokir, a local fisherman who cannot read or write but has an instinctive understanding of the water and wildlife. Kanai Dutt, a sophisticated translator from Delhi, also arrives in the region to visit his widowed aunt Nilima and to read the diary left behind by his late uncle, Nirmal, who was once involved in political activism and the Morichjhãpi refugee movement.
As Piya and Fokir explore the waterways together, they develop a deep, unspoken bond despite their cultural and linguistic differences. Through their journey, Ghosh contrasts scientific knowledge with traditional wisdom and highlights the beauty and danger of the natural world. The story also delves into the history of displacement and resistance in the Sundarbans, where poor settlers once clashed with the government over land and survival. In the novel’s climax, a fierce cyclone strikes; Fokir sacrifices his life to save Piya, symbolizing humanity’s fragile relationship with nature. By the end, Piya decides to return to the islands to continue her research and to honour Fokir’s memory by working with his widow.
