Book Summary:
Cultures and Organizations: Software of the Mind explores how culture shapes the way people think, act, work, and organize themselves—both nationally and in organizations. The basic metaphor is that culture is like “software of the mind,” programming people’s basic mental patterns, values, and norms. The book presents empirical research, across many countries and organizations, showing how different cultures vary along certain dimensions. Understanding these cultural dimensions helps explain misunderstandings between people from different societies, informs how organizations should adapt, and improves intercultural cooperation.
Some of the major themes include:
-
The idea of mental programming: that much of what people take for granted comes from early cultural conditioning, which then guides behavior almost automatically.
-
Differences in national culture influence organizational culture (but organizations also have their own sub‑cultures).
-
There are predictable patterns in how cultures differ—dimensions such as Power Distance (degree to which inequality is accepted), Individualism vs Collectivism, Uncertainty Avoidance (tolerance for ambiguity), Masculinity vs Femininity (competitive vs caring values), Long‑term vs Short‑term Orientation, and Indulgence vs Restraint. These have been refined over time.
-
Cultural differences affect business practices: leadership style, decision‑making, hierarchy, communication style, negotiation, conflict handling. For example, in high power distance societies, hierarchy is more accepted; in high uncertainty‑avoidance cultures, people prefer rules, structure, predictability.
-
Practical guidance for multinational companies or for people interacting across cultures: recognizing cultural differences, being sensitive to them, adapting management or communication styles, avoiding assuming your own culture’s norms are universal.
Overall, the book is both theoretical (with data, dimensions, measurement) and practical (how to apply in management, cross‑cultural contexts). It argues that being aware of cultural programming allows better cooperation, more effective leadership, and fewer misunderstandings in an interconnected world.
About the Author:
Gerard Hendrik “Geert” Hofstede (1928‑2020) was a Dutch social psychologist and anthropologist, well known for his pioneering work in cross‑cultural studies, particularly as they apply to organizations and international management. He held positions such as Professor Emeritus of Organizational Anthropology and International Management at Maastricht University in the Netherlands. Before his academic fame, Hofstede worked for IBM, where he collected large scale data on employee attitudes across many countries; this research formed the empirical basis for many of his cultural dimensions. Over his career, he wrote several influential books—including Culture’s Consequences and Cultures and Organizations: Software of the Mind (co‑authored in later editions with his son Gert Jan Hofstede and Michael Minkov). His work has been translated into many languages, and his cultural dimensions model (initially with four dimensions, later expanded to six) remains widely used in both academia and business for understanding differences among national cultures and how culture impacts organizational behavior.
