About the Author:
Kenneth David Kaunda (1924–2021) was a teacher, nationalist, and the founding President of independent Zambia, serving from 1964 to 1991. Born in the British colony of Northern Rhodesia, he began his career as an educator before turning to political activism against British colonial rule. As leader of the UNIP, Kaunda played a central role in Zambia’s peaceful transition to independence. Known for his commitment to nonviolence, pan-Africanism, and anti-apartheid diplomacy, he became one of Africa’s most respected post-colonial statesmen. Even after leaving office, Kaunda remained active in regional peace efforts and HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns. Zambia Shall Be Free is his seminal autobiographical work, written when he was still a revolutionary leader, and reflects the aspirations and moral convictions that defined both his political journey and Zambia’s birth as a nation.
