Born in Mysore, Laxman began his career as a part-time cartoonist and later joined The Free Press Journal in Mumbai. His big break came when he joined The Times of India, where he created the Common Man, a character that became synonymous with his work.

Laxman's cartoons were characterized by their simplicity, clarity, and sharp social commentary. He used his art to comment on the political and social issues of the time, often highlighting the gap between the ruling class and the common people. His work earned him several accolades, including the Padma Bhushan in 1973 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2005, two of India's highest civilian awards. He also received the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1984 for his contributions to journalism and creative communication.
