Book Summary
Wonder Girls collects the stories of fifteen young Indian women (millennials) from diverse fields — from neuroscience and science to rock climbing, photography, brand marketing, sports, acting, and more — who charted non‑traditional paths and carved careers “their way”. Varsha Adusumilli wanted role models who are relatable: young women not hugely famous or distant, but ones whose backgrounds, struggles, choices, doubts mirror what many girls face, especially from smaller towns or more traditional households. Each chapter starts with a striking statistic (e.g. on female participation in sports, or workforce participation) and then describes the subject’s upbringing, defining moments, obstacles, mentors, decisions, trade‑offs, failures, and how she overcame them. At the end, the book weaves together common threads or “success mantras” drawn from these lives: clarity of purpose, financial independence, persistence, having mentors or allies, stepping outside comfort, maintaining one’s identity, and more. The goal is both inspirational and practical: to show young women that many career choices are possible and that even if the path is hard, it’s not out of reach.
About the Author
Varsha Adusumilli is an Indian entrepreneur, writer, and advocate for young women’s career choices. She studied Information Systems at BITS Pilani‑Goa, worked in startups, built experience in venture capital (notably with a seed fund called Kstart for Kalaari Capital), and also worked at the media startup YourStory in business development and campaigns. Growing up in Goa and Hyderabad and living in Bangalore, she has seen both urban and non‑urban India, which informs her sensitivity to the different kinds of restrictions and expectations young women face. Her debut book Wonder Girls was born from witnessing the questions girls ask: about marriage, about freedom, about whether their dreams are valid — questions she heard when attending a wedding in Jaipur. She believes deeply in the power of “relatable role models” — women who are not remote stars, but close enough in background that young girls can see them and think, “Maybe I can too.” Through Wonder Girls and her initiatives like the Wonder Girls Academy / Fellowship, she seeks to widen the frame of what young Indian women believe is possible for their lives.
