Book Summary:
White Noise (1985) is a novel that captures modern life’s anxieties, especially the fear of death, the saturation of media, and the omnipresence of consumer culture.
The story is told from the first‐person perspective of Jack Gladney, a professor who has made his name as the founder and head of the field of “Hitler Studies” at a small college. He lives with his wife Babette (who secretly takes an experimental drug called Dylar, supposedly to help with the fear of death), and their children, in a typical American college town.
The plot is not so much about what happens in a conventional sense as about how Jack and his family react to various disruptions—everyday and extraordinary—that force them to face mortality, identity, and the fragility of their world. Major among these disruptions is the “Airborne Toxic Event,” a chemical cloud released by an accident that threatens the town and leads to mass evacuation.
Also central is Jack’s awareness of death: his obsession with mortality shapes much of his thinking, his relationships, and his responses to events. Babette’s use of Dylar highlights the lengths people will go to in order to escape or control that fear. Other themes include the effects of technology and media (TV, radio, supermarkets, university life) on consciousness; how consumerism and branding become substitutes for meaning; fear, distraction, and how people cope with the unknown.
One striking feature is how DeLillo uses mundane details—supermarket aisles, small household objects, media broadcasts—as part of the fabric of unease. The novel oscillates between dark humor, satire, philosophical reflection, and existential dread. It ends ambiguously, with Jack reflecting on signs of order, the rearrangement of a supermarket (something small but symbolic), and the persistence of everyday life even when nothing feels quite stable.
