Book Summary
Waiting for the Mahatma (1955) is a novel by R.K. Narayan set in the fictional South Indian town of Malgudi during India’s struggle for independence. The story follows Sriram, a somewhat naïve and self-absorbed young man, whose comfortable life is disrupted when he falls in love with Bharati, a devout follower of Mahatma Gandhi. Through Bharati and his involvement in the Quit India Movement, Sriram is drawn into the freedom struggle and gradually matures, though his motivations often remain tied to his desire for Bharati rather than true political conviction. Gandhi himself appears in the novel, serving as a moral compass and symbol of India’s changing identity. Narayan blends gentle humor with political and emotional complexity, portraying the tension between personal desires and national duty in a subtle, character-driven narrative.
