Book Summary –

Primarily covering the period from late 1984 into Rajiv Gandhi’s early years as Prime Minister, Vengeance offers a detailed, journalistic account of how India responded in the aftermath of Indira Gandhi’s assassination. Gupte reconstructs the events surrounding her killing by two Sikh bodyguards on 31 October 1984, contextualizing it against the backdrop of Operation Blue Star and rising militancy in Punjab—culminating in the horrific anti‑Sikh riots and communal violence that followed. The book is structured in two parts:

  • Part I, “The News,” provides a vivid chronicle of the assassination and the ensuing violence. Gupte highlights alleged political complicity and orchestrated mob behavior, laying much of the responsibility on the Congress leadership—especially Indira Gandhi herself—as a central instigator of crisis rather than merely a victim.

  • Part II shifts to broader political, social, and economic dynamics that shaped post‑1984 India, particularly under Rajiv Gandhi’s emergent leadership. Gupte discusses how destabilizing communal tensions, population pressures, and governance failures converged in this moment of transition.

Critics have described the book as fast‑paced and informative—as if reading “six months' newspaper headlines at one sitting”—but also view it as uneven and somewhat one‑sided, emphasizing Hindu‑Sikh violence while largely omitting retaliatory actions by Sikh perpetrators. Some argue the portrayal simplifies complex roots of communal unrest.
