What was the SS?

What did it really do? What sort of people were SS men? What kind of country could found such an organisation - and then deny knowledge of its worst activities?

The first SS men were bodyguards for Party leaders, but in the early 1930s they began to use their wide- ranging presence to gather information. Then they took charge, in 1933, of concentration camps.

The start of the intelligence side attracted university graduates to the SS. Its élitism appealed to them. At the other extreme, the concentration camps were a haven for the work-shy bully-boys. Yet in 1939, the SS was still largely part-time and middle-class.

It was the war which changed it all...
