Book Summary:
In The Tree of Hands (1984), successful novelist Benet Archdale lives in North London with her young son James and is visited by her mentally unstable mother, Mopsa. When James tragically dies at hospital, Mopsa impulsively kidnaps another child as a replacement—setting off a tense psychological drama of grief, ambiguity, and moral crisis. As layers of deception and suspicion unravel, the story hurtles toward shocking consequences in an emotionally intense, carefully plotted unraveling. This novel won the CWA Silver Dagger in 1984.Meanwhile, A Demon in My View (1976), Rendell’s first CWA Gold Dagger winner, introduces Arthur Johnson—a quiet, solitary rent collector whose loneliness has warped into a compulsive ritual of strangling a mannequin in his cellar to suppress homicidal urges. When a new lodger—with the same name—moves in, Arthur’s dark equilibrium collapses, forcing him back to the streets in hunt of real victims. The collision of these two lives creates a grim study of psychopathy, coercion, and the hidden perils behind seemingly ordinary façades, set against the backdrop of 1970s London. This inverted‑crime narrative is psychologically rich and deeply unsettling.
