Book Summary
The Time Machine (1895) is a groundbreaking science fiction novella by H.G. Wells and one of the earliest works to explore the concept of time travel.
The story follows an unnamed protagonist known only as “The Time Traveller,” a Victorian scientist who invents a machine that can transport him through time. After a demonstration to skeptical friends, he embarks on a journey to the far future, landing in the year 802,701 AD.
There, he encounters two strange species:
-
The Eloi: gentle, childlike people who live a carefree life on the surface.
-
The Morlocks: brutish, nocturnal creatures who dwell underground and maintain the machinery of the world.
As the Time Traveller observes their societies, he realizes a disturbing truth: the Eloi are not the dominant species but are instead being preyed upon by the Morlocks, who represent the darker side of technological and social evolution. The novella delves into themes of class division, technological advancement, and human degeneration.
Eventually, the Time Traveller escapes the Morlocks and travels even farther into the future, witnessing the Earth’s final days before returning to his own time. He tells his story to his skeptical peers—then vanishes again, never to return.
About the Author –
Herbert George Wells was a prolific English writer, often called the "father of science fiction." He pioneered the genre with other major works such as:
-
The War of the Worlds
-
The Invisible Man
-
The Island of Doctor Moreau
Wells combined imaginative storytelling with sharp social commentary and was known for his foresight on technological and societal issues. Many of his predictions—including aerial warfare and genetic engineering—were eerily accurate.
Wells was also a trained scientist and a staunch advocate of social reform. His blend of scientific curiosity and humanist philosophy helped establish science fiction as a serious literary genre.
