Book Summary

The Second Form at St Clare’s is the fourth book in the St Clare’s series by Enid Blyton, following twin girls Patricia (“Pat”) and Isabel O’Sullivan as they enter their second form at the boarding school St Clare’s.

This term is eventful: the form includes old girls who were held back (Elsie Fanshawe, who is spiteful, and Anna Johnson, who is lazy) and two new girls, Gladys Hilman and Mirabel Unwin. Elsie and Anna are appointed joint head girls, which causes tension because Elsie uses the position to be overbearing. Mirabel arrives somewhat rebelliously, with a difficult attitude, and Gladys is withdrawn due to worries about her ill mother.

Over the course of the term, various conflicts arise: Mirabel’s behaviour initially causes disruption; Elsie uses her authority in hurtful ways; Gladys struggles emotionally; Anna surprisingly steps up, becoming responsible and caring. Through friendship, understanding, and a few “wake‑up” moments, Mirabel learns humility; Gladys opens up and is supported; Anna grows into her role as a leader; and Elsie is shown consequences for spiteful behaviour. There are episodes like a concert, a midnight feast, dramas around being head girl, jealousy, and reconciliation.

By the end of term, Anna is promoted to sole head girl after Elsie is stripped of the role due to her continued misbehaviour. Mirabel decides to stay at school rather than leave, having earned acceptance. Elsie is allowed to go up to Third Form (with a warning to improve her behaviour). The story emphasises growth, friendship, taking responsibility, understanding others, and how even difficult characters can change somewhat if given support.

About the Author:

Enid Mary Blyton (11 August 1897 – 28 November 1968) was an English author, one of the most celebrated and prolific writers of children’s literature in the 20th century. She wrote hundreds of books (stories, adventure series, school stories, fantasy, mystery) and her work has sold hundreds of millions of copies worldwide, translated into dozens of languages. Blyton grew up in south London and Kent, trained as a teacher, and her writing often reflects her early experience with school life, her love of nature, children’s games, boarding schools etc. Her writing style is simple, accessible, imaginative, with strong moral overtones (friendship, kindness, responsibilities, fairness) and memorable character types. She has been both loved and critiqued: children around the world still adore her stories, though some modern readers note that some aspects of her older books (attitudes, characterisations) reflect their times and may seem dated.
