About the Author — 

Syd Field (1935–2013), often hailed as the “guru of screenwriting,” revolutionized how screenplays are taught and structured. His landmark book Screenplay: The Foundations of Screenwriting (1979) established the now-classic three-act paradigm—complete with pivotal plot points and a powerful midpoint—that remains a cornerstone in film writing. Over a half-century career, Field authored eight best-selling screenwriting guides—including The Screenwriter’s Workbook—which have served as essential texts in hundreds of colleges and universities, and have been translated into dozens of languages .
