Book Summary:
The Picture of Dorian Gray is Oscar Wilde’s only novel, first published in 1890 and later revised in 1891. It tells the haunting story of Dorian Gray, a handsome young man who makes a fateful wish—that a portrait of him painted by his friend Basil Hallward will age instead of him. Influenced by the hedonistic philosophy of Lord Henry Wotton, Dorian plunges into a life of indulgence, vanity, and moral corruption, all while his youthful appearance remains unchanged. Meanwhile, the portrait bears the marks of his sins, growing increasingly grotesque. As Dorian spirals deeper into depravity, the novel explores themes of beauty, morality, influence, and the duality of human nature. A blend of gothic horror and philosophical reflection, the novel critiques Victorian society’s obsession with appearance and artifice while showcasing Wilde’s wit and decadent style.
About the Author:
Oscar Wilde (1854–1900) was an Irish poet, playwright, and novelist renowned for his sharp wit, flamboyant personality, and scathing social commentary. Educated at Trinity College Dublin and Oxford University, he became a leading figure in the Aesthetic Movement, which championed “art for art’s sake.” Wilde is best known for his plays—such as The Importance of Being Earnest—and for The Picture of Dorian Gray, his only novel. His literary success was cut short by scandal: after a highly publicized trial, he was imprisoned for “gross indecency” due to his homosexuality, which was illegal in Victorian England. Despite his tragic downfall, Wilde's works remain celebrated for their elegance, irony, and enduring insight into human nature.
