Book Summary
The Phoenix and the Carpet (1904) by E. Nesbit is the fantastical second installment of the Psammead Trilogy, following Five Children and It. The story centers on five siblings—Cyril, Anthea, Robert, Jane, and the baby Lamb—who accidentally burn their nursery carpet during fireworks. Their parents replace it with a secondhand one that conceals a glowing egg, which hatches into a talking Phoenix. This mystical bird reveals that the carpet is magical, granting three wishes a day, and so begins a series of inventive and episodic adventures—from exotic landscapes and London theaters to tropical isles. These escapades are filled with whimsy, humour, and occasional peril: the Phoenix gets carried away (literally) in a theater believing it's his temple; the carpet becomes overwhelmed fetching 199 Persian cats, and the children even help arrange a royal wedding for their cook and a reformed burglar. Eventually, fatigue overcomes both Phoenix and carpet. The Phoenix lays a new egg, immolates itself in a ritual farewell, and the carpet carries its egg to a safe place to hatch in two thousand years. The finale leaves the children with an unexpected parcel of gifts and a fleeting golden feather—an enchanting conclusion to their magical journey.
About the Author
Edith Nesbit (1858–1924), better known as E. Nesbit, was a pioneering English author of children’s literature and poetry. Born in London and raised partly across France and Germany, she began writing in the early 1890s and went on to produce over 60 books for young readers. Nesbit co-founded the Fabian Society and infused her stories with both imaginative fantasy and sharp observations of everyday life. Her hallmark was placing modern children into realistic settings where magical elements—like wishing beasts or flying carpets—intrude upon their ordinary world. Her warm, witty, and unsentimental storytelling transformed children's literature and influenced luminaries such as C. S. Lewis and J. K. Rowling. Critics like C. S. Lewis praised her psychological realism, while Rowling credited her influence on character naming and creature creation.
