Book Summary —
The Nanda Devi Affair is less a mountaineering chronicle and more a lyrical "diary of mountain relish" by Bill Aitken, exploring his spiritual and emotional attachment to Nanda Devi—the revered patron goddess of the Kumaon and Garhwal Himalayas Through a decade spanning from the 1970s to the 1980s, Aitken recounts his numerous treks into the Nanda Devi sanctuary—not as a trained climber, but as a romantic drawn by awe, reverence, and devotion.
Interwoven with vivid travel experiences are rich studies of regional folklore, religious customs, and the cult of the mountain goddess. Aitken offers sharp, often wry commentary on bureaucratic hurdles—particularly how overzealous officials and so‑called professional mountaineers can harm both culture and ecology. The tone is deeply personal, imparting the spiritual resonance of the land rather than its topographical details.
Readers have praised the book for transporting them into the Himalayan wilderness, describing it as poetic, immersive, and suffused with ancestral traditions and timeless landscapes.
About the Author —
Bill Aitken (1934–2025) was a Scottish-born travel writer who made India his spiritual and literary home. After earning an M.A. in comparative religion from the University of Leeds, he hitchhiked to India in 1959—becoming an early participant in what would later be dubbed the "Hippie Trail". He lived for extended periods in Himalayan ashrams (notably in Kausani and Mirtola), embraced Indian citizenship in 1972, and forged a deep, lifelong connection with the cultural and natural fabric of Uttarakhand
Over more than six decades, Aitken authored two dozen books—ranging from explorations of India’s rivers and hills to its spiritual traditions and railways—including Seven Sacred Rivers, Footloose in the Himalaya, and Exploring Indian Railways He played active roles in cultural institutions: serving as President of the Friends of the National Rail Museum and Honorary Librarian of the Himalayan Club . His writing was characterized by immersive narrative, cultural empathy, environmental awareness, and gentle humor.
Aitken passed away in April 2025 in Dehradun at the age of 90, leaving behind a luminous legacy as a chronicler of India’s spiritual and mountainous terrains
