Book Summary
The Mystery of the Invisible Thief is the eighth book in Enid Blyton's The Five Find-Outers and Dog series, first published in 1950. The story follows the five children—Fatty (Frederick Trotteville), Larry (Laurence Daykin), Pip (Philip Hilton), Daisy (Margaret Daykin), Bets (Elizabeth Hilton)—and their dog Buster as they investigate a series of peculiar robberies in the village of Peterswood.
The thief leaves behind only a few cryptic clues: enormous footprints, glove prints, a strange criss-cross mark on the ground, and two torn pieces of paper. The only people in the village with feet large enough to fit the footprints are Mr. Goon, the local policeman, and Colonel Cross, neither of whom seem likely culprits. Fatty employs his talent for disguise to gather information and outwit Mr. Goon, especially when both visit Colonel Cross to inquire about the large shoes.
As the thief strikes again, the children discover that the robber isn't invisible at all. The culprit is the baker, a small man who used oversized boots to create the illusion of enormous feet, allowing him to execute his crimes unnoticed. This clever ruse enabled him to escape through windows and down drainpipes, actions that would have been impossible for a larger person.
