Book Summary
The Mammaries of the Welfare State (2000) is the sequel to Upamanyu Chatterjee’s debut novel, English, August. The narrative continues the journey of Agastya Sen, a disillusioned civil servant, as he navigates the bureaucratic labyrinth of the fictional state of Madna. The story is set against the backdrop of an impending epidemic, providing a satirical lens on the inefficiencies and absurdities of the Indian administrative system. The title itself is a satirical nod to the exploitation and mismanagement within the welfare state. The novel delves into themes of political bureaucracy, systemic failures, and the personal dilemmas of those entangled within it. Chatterjee's narrative is characterized by its dark humor and sharp critique of institutional dysfunction. The book was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2004 for writing in English.
