Book Summary
The Lords of the North (2006/2007) is the third installment of Bernard Cornwell’s The Saxon Stories (also known as The Last Kingdom series), set during late 9th‑century England under Viking threat . The protagonist, Uhtred of Bebbanburg, a Northumbrian by birth yet raised by Danes, helped King Alfred secure Wessex’s freedom. Disillusioned with Alfred’s piety and limited rewards, Uhtred returns north seeking revenge and to rescue his captive stepsister. He finds Northumbria in chaos, ruled by rival Viking lords such as Kjartan the Cruel from the fortress of Dunholm
Uhtred allies with a former slave, Guthred, who claims kingship by divine vision. Together with Uhtred and his companion Hild, they forge an unlikely alliance of Christians and Danes to challenge the entrenched Viking power structure. Betrayal, warfare, and personal sacrifice follow as Uhtred strives to reclaim honor and position amid shifting loyalties . The story weaves human drama with battle-honed strategy, exploring themes of cultural identity, faith, power, and destiny.
About the Author:
Bernard Cornwell (born 1944) is a British historical novelist celebrated for bestselling series like Sharpe and The Saxon Stories, now adapted into the hit TV series The Last Kingdom. Raised in Essex by a strict religious family, he trained in history at University College London and later worked for the BBC and Thames Television. Moving to the U.S. in 1979, he began writing historical fiction to support his life without a work visa—creating enduring, character-driven epics set in pivotal moments of British military history .
Cornwell's novels are known for immersive battle scenes, stark pacing, and vivid characters, all grounded in rigorous research. He often includes historical notes to separate fact from artistic license. He described writing The Lords of the North and the larger series as a deeply personal endeavor—partly inspired by discovering ancestral ties to Uhtred’s lineage at Bebbanburg castle. Writing remains his core mission: “to entertain,” he says, though his work routinely sparks broader curiosity about real history.
