Book Summary
The Kingmaker’s Daughter is a historical novel set during the Wars of the Roses in fifteenth‑century England. It tells the story of Anne Neville and her elder sister Isabel, daughters of Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick (known as “the Kingmaker”), a powerful magnate who wields political power largely by arranging marriages and alliances. Without a male heir, Warwick uses his daughters as pawns in his political games. Anne grows up in a turbulent environment, at court under King Edward IV and Queen Elizabeth Woodville. Her life is one of constant change, shifting loyalties, danger, and tragedy. She is married at a young age (around fourteen), and after her husband and father die, she is left to fend for herself. Anne later marries Richard, Duke of Gloucester (who becomes King Richard III), setting her on a path that involves both ambition and enormous personal loss, including the death of her only son Prince Edward. Throughout the novel, Anne must navigate a treacherous royal court, uncertain allegiances, and the competing demands of her sister, her husband, and her own survival.
The novel also examines the relationship between the sisters Anne and Isabel, their love and rivalry, and how their father’s ambitions affect their fates. Ultimately, The Kingmaker’s Daughter is as much about power, loyalty, betrayal and identity as it is about the historical events of English dynastic conflict.
About the Author:
Philippa Gregory is a bestselling English author of historical fiction, born on 9 January 1954 in Nairobi (Kenya) and raised mostly in England. She holds a PhD from the University of Edinburgh and has become particularly well known for novels that re‑imagine the lives of women in history—often those on the margins, who find themselves used in political machinations, royal disputes, marriages, betrayals, or wars. Her breakout fame came with The Other Boleyn Girl, but she has written many novels in the Plantagenet/Tudor period, especially in her series The Cousins’ War. Gregory is known for richly detailed settings, emotional insight, and exploring how historical events shape and consume women’s lives. She also does research and works with historical sources for background, though her novels are fiction and include speculative aspects.
