About the Editor & Translator: 

Lakshmi Holmström (1935–2016) was an acclaimed Indian‑British translator, editor, and literary critic, whose work brought contemporary Tamil and other Indian women writers to global readers in fluent and vibrant English. Her first major project—the anthology The Inner Courtyard—set the tone for her distinguished career, blending literary finesse with feminist and postcolonial awareness . Known as “the best contemporary anglophone translator India has” (per Amit Chaudhuri), Holmström championed authors like Bama, Ambai, Salma, and Ashokamitran, winning multiple awards—including the Crossword Book Award (for Karukku and In a Forest, A Deer) and the English PEN award for translating poem selections. In 2011, she was appointed MBE for her services to literature.
