Book Summary

In The Idea of Justice (2009), Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen challenges the dominant Western approach to justice—largely derived from social contract theorists like Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, and especially John Rawls. Rather than focusing on creating perfectly “just” institutions (as Rawls does in A Theory of Justice), Sen advocates a more pragmatic and comparative approach to justice—one that emphasizes removing clear injustices rather than obsessing over defining an ideal world.

Drawing from Indian philosophical traditions (like the ideas of Kautilya, Buddha, and Ashoka) and global thinkers like Adam Smith, Sen emphasizes public reasoning, pluralism, and the importance of real-world freedoms (a key concept from his earlier work on capabilities). Justice, according to Sen, is not about utopia, but about practical action to make the world less unjust—by empowering people with the freedom to lead lives they value.

Sen’s work bridges philosophy, economics, and politics, making a compelling case for a more inclusive, global, and action-oriented understanding of justice.

About the Author

Amartya Sen is an Indian economist and philosopher, globally acclaimed for his work on welfare economics, development theory, and the concept of human capabilities. Born in 1933 in Santiniketan, India, he studied at Presidency College (Calcutta) and Trinity College (Cambridge), and later held prominent academic positions at Harvard, Oxford, and Cambridge.

Sen received the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 1998 for his contributions to welfare economics and his groundbreaking analysis of poverty and famine. He is best known for developing the Capability Approach, a framework that measures well-being not by income alone but by a person’s real freedom to choose and act.

A strong advocate for democracy, pluralism, and ethical reasoning in public life, Sen's writings—such as Development as Freedom, Identity and Violence, and The Argumentative Indian—have had profound influence across disciplines.
