Book Summary
Set in a fictionalized version of ancient Greece, the play revolves around the character of Heracles (Hercules), who returns from his labors to find his city in disarray. Instead of being hailed as a hero, he is subjected to a trial that questions the morality of his past deeds. The narrative unfolds through a series of episodic scenes that blend farce, tragedy, and political commentary. The play employs songs, placards, and direct audience address, drawing heavily from Bertolt Brecht's Epic Theatre techniques.
Critics have noted that while the play's form is innovative, its content can be heavy-handed. Craig Clinton, in his critique, mentions that the play's "blatantly stated political point" is developed through "superficial stylistic elements," which may detract from its overall impact.
About the Authors
John Arden (1930–2012) was a prominent British playwright known for his politically engaged works that often challenged societal norms. His early plays, such as Serjeant Musgrave’s Dance (1959), gained critical acclaim for their innovative use of language and structure. Arden's collaboration with D’Arcy marked a shift towards more explicitly political theatre. Their partnership produced several works that critiqued imperialism, class structures, and historical narratives.
Margaretta D’Arcy (born 1934) is an Irish playwright, actress, and activist. Born in London to an Irish father and a Russian-Jewish mother, she moved to Ireland in the 1970s. D’Arcy's works often explore themes of Irish nationalism, civil liberties, and women's rights. In addition to her theatrical endeavors, she has been involved in various forms of activism, including protests against military presence in Ireland and campaigns for prisoners' rights.
