Book Summary
Published in 1925, The Great Gatsby is a classic American novel set during the Roaring Twenties, capturing the extravagance, ambition, and disillusionment of that era. The story is narrated by Nick Carraway, a Yale graduate and World War I veteran who moves to West Egg, Long Island. There, he becomes intrigued by his mysterious and wealthy neighbor, Jay Gatsby, known for hosting lavish parties. Gatsby is revealed to be deeply in love with Daisy Buchanan, Nick’s cousin, and has built his fortune in hopes of winning her back from her husband, Tom Buchanan. As the summer unfolds, the novel explores themes of wealth, idealism, social decay, and the elusive nature of the American Dream. Gatsby’s pursuit of Daisy ends in tragedy, reflecting the hollowness of material success and the loss of innocence in a modern, changing America.
About the Author:
Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald (1896–1940) was an American novelist, essayist, and short story writer, widely regarded as one of the greatest authors of the 20th century. Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, Fitzgerald rose to fame with his debut novel This Side of Paradise and quickly became a voice of the Jazz Age, a term he popularized. His writing explored themes of youth, love, wealth, and the disillusionment that followed the American Dream. Despite critical acclaim, he struggled with financial difficulties and alcoholism. The Great Gatsby, now considered his masterpiece, was not a major success during his lifetime but gained legendary status posthumously. Fitzgerald died at the age of 44, leaving behind a rich literary legacy that continues to influence American literature and culture.
