About the Author
Owen Jones (1809–1874) was a British architect, designer, and trailblazing theorist. Educated at the Royal Academy and after traveling across Europe and the Near East, he pioneered chromolithography through his documentation of the Alhambra. As Superintendent of Works for the Great Exhibition of 1851 and a founding influence on the Victoria & Albert Museum, he merged scholarship with pedagogy. In The Grammar of Ornament, Jones distilled his exploration of global design—drawing on the Alhambra, Egyptian art, Indian textiles, Celtic decoration, and natural forms—into a structured, visually rich manual of design principles that later shaped design education and aesthetic movements
