About the author

Born in New York City to Italian immigrant parents, Puzo grew up in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, he attended the City College of New York. Initially working as a civil servant, Puzo began writing short stories for men's magazines under the pseudonym Mario Cleri. His early novels, The Dark Arena (1955) and The Fortunate Pilgrim (1965), received critical acclaim but did not achieve commercial success.

In 1969, Puzo published The Godfather, a novel about the Corleone crime family. The book became a bestseller, selling over 9 million copies in its first two years and remaining on The New York Times Best Seller list for 67 weeks. It was later adapted into a film trilogy directed by Francis Ford Coppola, with Puzo co-writing the screenplays. The first two films won nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay for each.
