Book Summary
Stieg Larsson's debut novel opens with Mikael Blomkvist, a seasoned investigative journalist, suffering a crushing libel defeat that damages his reputation and magazine, Millennium. Meanwhile, Lisbeth Salander, a fiercely independent hacker with a dragon tattoo and piercing intellect, is hired to evaluate Blomkvist’s background and financial standing.
Blomkvist is then summoned by Henrik Vanger, an aging industrialist who believes his niece Harriet disappeared on his private island forty years ago—and was likely murdered. Hired to covertly document the family history, Blomkvist partners with Salander to dig deeper . As their investigation uncovers a trail of grisly serial murders and systemic corruption within the Vanger clan, tension escalates.
The climactic confrontation reveals Martin Vanger, Harriet’s brother, as a monster—he confesses to heinous crimes but denies involvement in Harriet’s disappearance. Near-death, Blomkvist is rescued by Salander; Martin ultimately dies in a car crash. They later locate Harriet alive in Australia. Meanwhile, Blomkvist, helped by evidence Salander uncovers, publishes an exposé on the financier who defamed him, restoring his honored status .
At its heart, the novel is a pulse-pounding thriller blending sexual violence, family secrets, revenge, and stark social critique, featuring Salander as a unique, morally complex heroine.
