Book Summary
Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni’s The Forest of Enchantments (2019) is a bold and lyrical retelling of the Ramayana from Sita’s perspective. The novel retraces her life—from her royal upbringing in Ayodhya, the exile in the forest, horrific abduction by Ravana, to her return and the harrowing trials she endures. Over ten years of writing, Divakaruni gives voice not only to Sita but also to women traditionally sidelined—Kaikeyi, Surpanakha, Mandodari—exploring themes of duty, betrayal, autonomy, and resilience. The narrative blends classical epic elements with contemporary sensibilities, inviting readers to reflect on gender, love, and moral agency while remaining grounded in beautifully imagined natural settings. Critics and readers alike have praised its emotional depth and vivid storytelling, though some felt it leaned heavily on feminist readings and could lack nuanced character development .
