Book Summary –
The Discovery of India is a sweeping and deeply reflective account of India’s history, culture, and philosophy, written by Jawaharlal Nehru during his imprisonment between 1942 and 1946. First published in 1946 and later reprinted in various editions including 1960, the book traces India’s journey from ancient civilization through its spiritual and intellectual achievements, to the colonial period and the rise of the Indian freedom movement. Nehru explores the richness of Indian heritage—its religions, philosophies, arts, and political ideas—while also critically examining social injustices and the impact of foreign rule. Written with passion and intellect, the book is both a tribute to India's past and a manifesto for its future. It blends historical scholarship with personal reflections, making it one of the most influential works in Indian political and cultural thought.
About the Author –
Jawaharlal Nehru (1889–1964) was an Indian freedom fighter, scholar, and statesman who became India’s first Prime Minister after independence in 1947. A central figure in the Indian independence movement and a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru was known for his secular, democratic, and modernist vision for the newly independent nation. Educated at Harrow, Eton, and Cambridge, and trained in law at the Inner Temple in London, he brought a blend of Western liberalism and Indian nationalism to his leadership. Nehru was also a prolific writer, with The Discovery of India, Glimpses of World History, and An Autobiography standing out as key texts that reveal his intellectual depth, progressive ideals, and deep love for India’s cultural and spiritual legacy.
