Book Summary
Originally published in 1999, The Cybergypsies is a gripping memoir of the author’s immersion into early cyberspace, the pre‑Internet age of BBSs and MUDs (multi-user dungeons) in the 1980s and early ’90s. Sinha—under the pseudonym “Bear”—chronicles how he became addicted to online fantasy games like Shades, neglecting his real-life relationships and earning the nickname “modem widow” from his wife. He introduces readers to a vivid cast of “cybergypsies”—virus writers, hackers, online sex workers, con artists, and gamers living dual realities in virtual worlds.
The narrative oscillates between chaotic gaming sessions and moments of sharp awareness: Sinha’s online escapades threaten his marriage, yet the Net becomes a tool for activism as he joins political causes like fundraising for Kurdish refugees and campaigning for justice in the wake of the Bhopal disaster. The nonlinear style mirrors the fractured, surreal texture of cyberspace itself. With wit, literary flair, and unflinching honesty, The Cybergypsies captures the thrill, danger, and moral ambiguity of early digital life—before it was sanitized by corporate platforms .
