Sahitya Śiromani Professor S. Ramachandra Rao

S. Ramachandra Rao had his education initially in Koiar and Bangalore (Karnataka) and subsequently Mysore at the Maharaja's College where he obtained his M.A. in Sanskrit in 1932. An adept also in the traditional modes of scholarship in Alaṁkāra and Vedanta, he was the pupil of such stalwarts like Professor D. Srinivasacharya and Pundit Hemmige Srinivasa Iyengar.

Equally proficient in both Indian and Western Philosophy, Professor Ramachandra Rao has been an indologist of great repute. Alaṁkāra and Vyakarana are his true forte as evidenced by his numerous contributions to these fields. He has been a teacher for over four decades and thus a fountainhead for a host of students. No matter what subject it was that he taught and to whom, he taught it with a vision and depth that made students take a keener interest in the subject.

It was under his leadership that the Department of Post- graduate Studies and Research in Sanskrit came to its own in Manasa Gangotri, University of Mysore. Tens of students obtained Ph.D.'s under him and many more under others in the Department, thanks to the encouragement, support and guidance from Professor Rao, Several scholars of today in Indology and Archaeology are his old students.
