Book Summary
In Stiff Upper Lip, Jeeves, Bertie Wooster finds himself once again embroiled in a series of social snafus and romantic complications — all of which require the intervention of his brilliant valet, Jeeves.
-
The story opens with Jeeves returning to service after substituting as a butler elsewhere. Aunt Dahlia’s husband, Tom Travers, is rivalrous with Sir Watkyn Bassett over collecting a prized black amber statuette, which adds tension..
-
Bertie acquires a flamboyant blue Tyrolean hat with a pink feather — a horrible fashion mistake in Jeeves’s eyes — which draws ridicule.
-
“Stinker” Harold Pinker is trying to secure a vicarage so he can marry Stiffy Byng, a niece of Sir Watkyn. But Sir Watkyn has refused to give him the vicarage, prompting various schemes.
-
Bertie, ever the good friend, ends up dragged into helping Stinker, despite his misgivings, which leads him back to Totleigh Towers — a place he’d prefer to avoid because of past entanglements.
-
Meanwhile, Gussie Fink‑Nottle (another recurring character) becomes involved in romantic and social entanglements involving Emerald Stoker and Madeline Bassett, and Roderick Spode (now ennobled) also reappears.
-
A stolen statuette, mistaken accusations, punches (literally), elopement, misunderstandings — as usual in a Jeeves & Wooster novel — threaten Bertie with disaster.
-
Ultimately, Jeeves manipulates events behind the scenes: the statuette is secretly reclaimed, Bertie is almost jailed, but Sir Watkyn drops the charge when Jeeves agrees to take a position in his service — though with the plan that Jeeves will resign soon after and return to Bertie. Bertie sacrifices the hated Tyrolean hat in gratitude.
The novel is typical Wodehouse: lighthearted, farcical, with intricate plotting, amusing characterizations, and Jeeves’s unflappable competence saving Bertie from social and legal disaster.
About the Author —
Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (October 15, 1881 – February 14, 1975) was an English humorist and one of the most celebrated comic writers of the 20th century.
-
Born in Guildford, Surrey, educated at Dulwich College, Wodehouse began writing early, first producing school stories and humorous pieces. Over time he developed his signature style of comic fiction, full of witty dialogue, absurd situations, and a love for farce.
-
He is best known for creating the characters Bertie Wooster and Jeeves — Bertie being the somewhat hapless aristocrat, Jeeves the unflappable, supremely competent valet. Their dynamic is the heart of many of his Jeeves & Wooster novels.
-
Wodehouse’s output was prolific: dozens of novels, hundreds of short stories, many plays, musical comedies, essays, etc. His work is admired for its consummate craftsmanship, elegant prose, vivid imagination, and ability to create a comically idealized world where manners, social class, and social faux‑pas become material for razor‑sharp humor
