Dalip Singh, a keen observer of life around him, writes in this volume on topics which have a universal appeal. His stories, translated from the Urdu, reflect an unusual combination of rustic humour and polished wit which often makes the reader smile, giggle or at times explode with laughter. His comments on the contemporary life in India cover a wide range of men and matters. He shows us the oddities in human behaviour-not forgetting his own-a quality that he shares with major humour writers of all times. He not only reveals the inconsistencies of life but also adds appetising spice to it. Dalip Singh, born in Gujranwala district (now in Pakistan) in 1932, migrated to Delhi after partition. He holds a Master's degree in English Literature from Delhi University. He joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1959. During most of his service career, he was associated with the publicity wing of the Ministry of External Affairs. He retired in 1992 as Chief Editor of India Perspectives. He enjoyed his travels to distant lands which his job afforded but continued to write, which is his first love.
