About the Author

Gregory David Roberts is an Australian author, songwriter, and artist, best known for his bestselling novel Shantaram. Born Gregory John Peter Smith in 1952 in Melbourne, Australia, Roberts' early life was marked by personal turmoil, including a failed marriage and the loss of custody of his daughter. These events led him to heroin addiction and a life of crime. In 1978, he was convicted of armed robbery and sentenced to 19 years in prison. Roberts escaped from Pentridge Prison in 1980 and fled to India, where he lived as a fugitive for a decade. During this time, he became involved in various illicit activities, including counterfeiting and smuggling, while also establishing a free medical clinic for the impoverished residents of Mumbai's Dharavi slum.
