An Educator Introduces MAX C. OTTO

Max C. Otto is one of the foremost teachers of philosophy in this country. Now Emeritus Professor at the University of Wisconsin after almost forty years on its faculty, he has achieved a nation- wide reputation as a thinker and teacher whose persistent thesis has been that philosophy is the concern of Every- man rather than of professionals alone. His course "Man and Nature" was, for twenty-five years, one of the great educa- tional offerings in the University of Wisconsin's brilliant teach- ing history.

Professor Otto came to this country from Germany in 1881, at the age of five. After studying at Carroll College, the Universities of Chicago, Heidelberg and Wisconsin he re- ceived his Ph.D. at the latter institution in 1911. He has been President of the American Philosophical Association (Western Branch) and is the author of numerous writings. His best known works Things and Ideals (1924), Natural Laws and Human Hopes (1926) and The Human Enterprise (1940) be- long in the naturalistic tradition of J. S. Mill, William James and John Dewey. Humane, warm and in the best sense simple, his wisdom is pervaded by a profound sense of dedication to the enrichment of man's intellectual and spiritual life-
