Aeschylus (525-c.456 B.C.) was the first of the great Greek tragedians. The four plays presented in this volume - together with the Oresteian Trilogy - are all that survive of his work. The Persians is set against the Athenian victory at Salamis, which took place only eight years before the play was written. In Seven Against Thebes the two sons of Oedipus are relentlessly pursued to their death by a family curse. But in The Suppliants and Prometheus con-flict of principle is resolved by rational compromise.

About the Author: Aeschylus (c. 525/524 – c. 456/455 BCE)

Aeschylus is often called the father of tragedy. He was the earliest of the three great ancient Greek tragedians (followed by Sophocles and Euripides) and significantly shaped the structure of Greek drama. He introduced the second actor on stage (previously there had been only one), allowing for dramatic dialogue and complex character interactions.

His surviving plays include:

The Persians (the oldest surviving Greek play)
Seven Against Thebes
The Suppliants
The Oresteia trilogy (Agamemnon, The Libation Bearers, The Eumenides)
