Book Summary

The Pregnant King (first published 2008) is Devdutt Pattanaik’s debut novel, woven from a lesser-known mythic episode in the Mahabharata, reimagined with imaginative storytelling and contemporary sensibility. The novel centers on Yuvanashva, a childless king of Vallabhi, who accidentally consumes a fertility potion intended for his queens and becomes pregnant himself, giving birth to Mandhata. This extraordinary event forces Yuvanashva—and the reader—to grapple with questions of gender, identity, and duty entwined in dharma.

Alongside Yuvanashva's unique dilemma, the narrative features strong female characters like his mother Shilavati, who assumes the role of regent despite societal opposition. The plot is enriched by multiple supporting characters who embody fluid gender roles—Somvat, who gives up his manhood to become a wife; Shikhandi, raised as a son to mother a child; Arjuna, punished and forced into femininity; and Ileshwara, shifting between god and goddess with the lunar cycle.

The novel explores themes of gender fluidity, motherhood, power, and fairness. Pattanaik challenges traditional binaries: can a king be a mother? Can a man be called “mother” by his child? By weaving myth and modern questions, he proposes that identity and roles are malleable—especially when moral complexity demands insight and empathy.

About the Author —

Devdutt Pattanaik (b. 1970 in Mumbai) is an Indian mythologist, author, illustrator, and cultural commentator who trained as a medical doctor before dedicating himself full-time to mythological storytelling. With over 50 books (including The Pregnant King, Myth = Mithya, Jaya, Business Sutra) and more than 1,000 columns, he blends Eastern mythic traditions with modern discourse on management, leadership, identity, and gender

Pattanaik is well-known for making complex mythological ideas accessible through narrative and visuals. His distinctive style combines storytelling, symbolism, and philosophical reflection—and is widely regarded for popularizing mythology in corporate and popular cultures in India. He has consulted for television series like Devlok and Business Sutra, served as chief belief officer at major organizations, and frequently speaks at events like TED India.

Though widely beloved, Pattanaik’s interpretations—especially of sacred texts—have sparked debate. Some critics argue he mixes myth with personal opinion and exaggerates narrative elements, cautioning readers to see his work as interpretive rather than canonical
