Book Summary:
Peace at Last by Jill Murphy is a charming and gently humorous bedtime picture book that captures the universal experience of struggling to fall asleep. The story follows Mr Bear as he desperately seeks a peaceful night's rest, but his efforts are thwarted by a barrage of household disturbances—from Mrs Bear’s loud snoring and Baby Bear’s energetic bedtime play, to the ticking clock, dripping tap, cuckoo clock, and nighttime wildlife noise. As Mr Bear ventures from bedroom to bedroom (even ending up in the car!), he repeatedly exclaims, “Oh no… I can’t stand this!” before finally finding quiet—just in time for his alarm to go off the next morning. With simple, repetitive language full of onomatopoeic sounds and delightfully detailed illustrations, Peace at Last is a delightful read-aloud that children love to join in, making it a perennial favorite for bedtime routines and early readers.
About The Author:
Jill Murphy (5 July 1949 – 18 August 2021) was a beloved British children’s author and illustrator whose whimsical, heartfelt stories shaped generations. Born in London, she began creating her own illustrated books by the age of six and later studied at Chelsea, Croydon, and Camberwell art schools.
She wrote The Worst Witch at 18, drawing heavily on her own strict convent school experiences—the manuscript was initially rejected before being published in 1974, subsequently becoming a bestseller and launching her literary career. Her Large Family picture books—starting with Five Minutes’ Peace (1986)—delightfully portray the domestic chaos of an elephant family, selling millions worldwide and inspiring a beloved TV adaptation.
Her first picture book, Peace at Last (1980)—which introduced the Bear family—was highly praised and commended for a Kate Greenaway Medal.Over her nearly five-decade career, she authored and illustrated over thirty books, including both picture books and middle-grade novels, with many adapted for film, theatre, and television.
Honored with major awards like the Smarties Prize and multiple commendations for the Kate Greenaway Medal, Murphy’s stories are celebrated for their warmth, humor, and honest reflection of childhood and family life. She lived in Cornwall and continued to create until her passing in 2021, leaving behind a rich legacy cherished by children and adults alike.
