About the Author 

Henri Charrière (1906–1973) was a Frenchman who became famous for his autobiographical novel Papillon, which he claimed was a true account of his imprisonment and escape from the French penal system in South America. Convicted in 1931 for the murder of a Parisian pimp—a charge he always denied—Charrière was sent to the brutal penal colony of French Guiana. After numerous escape attempts, he finally found freedom in Venezuela, where he built a new life.
