Book Summary –
Daddy-Long-Legs is a heartwarming and humorous coming-of-age story told through a series of letters written by Jerusha “Judy” Abbott, a bright and imaginative orphan. After an anonymous benefactor offers to fund her college education on the condition that she write him monthly letters (without expecting a reply), Judy nicknames him “Daddy-Long-Legs” after seeing only his tall shadow. Through her letters, Judy shares her academic journey, personal growth, and evolving worldview as she transitions from a sheltered orphanage life to the freedom and challenges of higher education. The story gently explores themes of identity, independence, gratitude, and love, with a charming twist at the end when the mysterious benefactor’s identity is finally revealed.
About the Author:
Jean Webster (1876–1916) was an American author, social reformer, and advocate for women's education and child welfare. Born Alice Jane Chandler Webster, she was a great-niece of Mark Twain and inherited his wit and storytelling talent. Webster’s writing often reflected her progressive views, particularly on social issues such as orphan care and women’s independence. Daddy-Long-Legs, her most famous work, remains a beloved classic for its warmth, humor, and feminist undertones. Tragically, Webster died shortly after the birth of her daughter, but her legacy endures through her uplifting and socially conscious literature.
