My Land and My People (first published in 1962) is the first autobiography by the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso. The book traces his early life and upbringing in Tibet, his recognition as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama when he was a young child, the traditional Buddhist education he received, and the spiritual, social, and political life of Tibet in those times. It then moves into the increasing pressures Tibet faced with the encroachment of Chinese influence, the invasion by the People’s Republic of China, and the tensions that followed between Chinese authorities and the Tibetan government.

Eventually, the narrative culminates in 1959 with the Dalai Lama’s escape into exile in India, as conditions in Tibet deteriorated and the uprising forced him to flee.

Throughout, the tone is both personal and political: personal in that he shares childhood memories, spiritual formation, family, monastic education; political in that he presents Tibet’s plight, its traditions, its culture, and the challenges faced under Chinese occupation. The book is as much a plea to the international community—to remember Tibet and understand its people—as it is an account of one person’s life.

About the Author

Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, was born in 1935 in Taktser, Amdo (in what is now northeastern Tibet), to a modest farming family. Recognized at around age two as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama, he was taken to Lhasa to receive religious and secular training. He assumed full political power in his teens, at a time when Tibet was under increasing pressure from China. The Chinese invasion in 1950, followed by political upheaval, culminated in his flight to India in 1959, where he established a government in exile and has since lived working for the welfare of Tibetans, advocating for peace, human rights, cultural preservation, and religious freedom.
