Mother Teresa lived and worked in Calcutta, a city which she chose place to fulfil her mission of life-to work for of the poor. She came to India from her native Macedonia as a young nun to work in the Loreto order. And it was in Calcutta that she founded the Missionaries of Charity whose work now spans all the continents.

Sudeb Roy Chowdhury, the author of this book came to know Mother Teresa when she had started her work in Missionaries of Charity. This was in the 1970s, still the early days of Missionaries of Charity. As a journalist and a humanist Roy Chowdhury followed Mother's work closely and interviewed her extensively for several years. That resulted in his biography of Mother in Bengali titled maa teresa, which sold over ten thousand copies. Later the book was translated into Hindi, with this edition the book will now reach out to the English language world.

Written lucidly and with love for Mother Teresa's mission of serving the poorest of the poor, this book is more than a biography. What makes this book extra-ordinary is, the real life scenes from Mother Teresa's work for Calcutta's poor, her and her sisters' service to the suffering humanity, a service done with love. It is the love in the work of the Missionaries of Charity that this book marvelously encapsulates. It is a testimony to a live dynamic kind European Christian missionary's lifelong work for Calcutta's poor and suffering humanity in all societies. In forty-one chapters the book unravels the life and work of a world citizen who made Calcutta her home and the poor of the world her family.

Sudeb Roy Chowdhury worked as a journalist for the Bengali daily, Ananda Bazar Patrika. In a career spanning four decades, he covered national and international events, most importantly, the Bangladesh war of 1971. He was elected president of Calcutta Press Club several times.

Fr. Gaston Roberge, SJ is a Jesuit priest. A Canadian by birth, he has made Calcutta his home for the last fifty years. He has authored some twenty books on Cinema, Communication and Spirituality.
