About the Author

Sudhir Kakar (25 July 1938 – 22 April 2024) was a pioneering Indian psychoanalyst, cultural psychologist, and prolific author, celebrated for integrating Western psychoanalysis with deep insights into Indian spirituality, culture, and religion . He earned his mechanical engineering degree from Gujarat University, followed by business and economics qualifications in Germany and Austria, before training in psychoanalysis at the Sigmund‑Freud Institute in Frankfurt . Kakar taught and lectured globally—including at Harvard, IIT Delhi, Chicago, McGill, and INSEAD—and authored many influential works of both non‑fiction and fiction, such as The Inner World, Shamans, Mystics and Doctors, Intimate Relations, and The Analyst and the Mystic . Honored with numerous awards—including the Boyer Prize, Goethe Medal, and the Order of Merit of Germany—he was recognized by major journals like Le Nouvel Observateur and Die Zeit as one of the world’s foremost thinkers.
