Book Summary

Hollywood actress Jane Wilkinson hires Hercule Poirot to persuade her estranged husband, Lord Edgware, to grant her a divorce. To her surprise, Edgware has already agreed—but the very night Jane is seen dining in public, Lord Edgware is found brutally stabbed in his own library, with no plausible way for her to be the killer.

Soon after, Carlotta Adams, a skilled impersonator, is discovered dead from an overdose—found clutching pince-nez belonging to Jane. When another witness, Donald Ross, is murdered before he can reveal who he saw, Poirot begins untangling a web of impersonations, secret liaisons, hidden motives, and forged documents.

In a tense denouement, Poirot reveals that Jane orchestrated the entire scheme: she used Carlotta to impersonate her at the dinner party, stabbed her husband to free herself—so she could become a widow, not a divorcee (since her new suitor was Catholic). Carlotta was intentionally killed to silence her, and Donald Ross was eliminated to prevent him from exposing the ruse. Jane is arrested at the close of the novel.

About the Author

Dame Agatha Mary Clarissa Christie (1890–1976) was an English novelist renowned for her ingenious detective fiction. Known as the “Queen of Crime,” she authored 66 detective novels and 14 short story collections—and penned The Mousetrap, the world’s longest-running play—as well as romantic novels under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott .

Her iconic sleuths include Hercule Poirot, introduced in The Mysterious Affair at Styles (1920), and Miss Marple, debuting in Murder at the Vicarage (1930) . Drawing on her World War I experience in pharmacy, Christie often used poisons in her plots—appearing in over 30 of her titles.
