Book Summary:

In 1956 John Osborne's Look Back in Anger changed the course of English theatre.

'
Look Back in Anger presents post-war youth as it really is. To have done this at all would be a significant achievement; to have done it in a first play is a minor miracle. All the qualities are there, qualities one had despaired of ever seeing on stage - the drift towards anarchy, the instinctive leftishness, the automatic rejection of "official" attitudes, the surrealist sense of humour... the casual promiscuity, the sense of lacking a crusade worth fighting for and, underlying all these, the determination that no one who dies shall go unmourned.' Kenneth Tynan, Observer, 13 May 1956

'
Look Back in Anger... has its inarguable importance as the beginning of a revolution in the British theatre, and as the central and most immediately influential expression of the mood of its time, the mood of the "angry young man".' John Russell Taylor

About the Author:

John Osborne (1929–1994) was a British playwright and screenwriter best known for Look Back in Anger, which made him a central figure in the post-war cultural rebellion against Britain's conservative establishment.

Born in London, Osborne had a troubled upbringing and left school early. After working various jobs in theatre, he began writing plays, with Look Back in Anger becoming his first major success at the age of 26.

Following that, Osborne continued to write plays that challenged societal norms and authority, including:

  • The Entertainer (1957), which critiqued Britain’s cultural decline

  • Luther (1961), a historical play about Martin Luther

  • Inadmissible Evidence (1964)

He also wrote screenplays, essays, and memoirs. His work is known for its emotional volatility, biting language, and deep exploration of personal and social alienation.

Osborne was a complex and often controversial figure—fiercely opinionated, politically radical in his early years, and famously disdainful of mediocrity and complacency. Despite fading somewhat from the spotlight later in life, his influence on modern British theatre is profound. Look Back in Anger remains a touchstone for the power of theatre to confront personal and political realities head-on.
