About the Author –

Howard Pyle (1853–1911) was an American writer, illustrator, and educator, hailed as the "father of American illustration" and the founder of the Brandywine School . A Quaker from Wilmington, Delaware, he trained in New York and Philadelphia before becoming famed for his vivid adaptations of heroic medieval and colonial tales—most notably The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood and a four-volume Arthurian cycle . In 1903, he published this first Arthurian volume, combining carefully researched historical detail, storytelling, and dramatic illustrations. Through his storytelling and teaching—first at Drexel and later at his own art school—he shaped future giants like N. C. Wyeth and Maxfield Parrish .
