Book Summary –
Kim by Rudyard Kipling is a richly woven adventure novel set in colonial India during the late 19th century, blending elements of espionage, culture, and spiritual discovery. The story follows Kimball O’Hara, or “Kim,” an orphaned Irish boy who grows up on the streets of Lahore, perfectly blending into Indian society with his charm and quick wit. His life changes when he meets a wandering Tibetan lama seeking enlightenment, and Kim becomes his disciple and travel companion. Along their journey across the diverse landscape of India, Kim is drawn into “The Great Game” — the political and spy conflict between Britain and Russia for control of Central Asia. Torn between his duty as a British spy and his spiritual journey with the lama, Kim’s story becomes one of identity, loyalty, and self-discovery. Through its vivid descriptions, multicultural characters, and philosophical undertones, Kim stands as one of Kipling’s greatest works, offering a fascinating portrayal of India under British rule and the meeting of East and West.
About the Author –
Rudyard Kipling (1865–1936) was an English writer, poet, and journalist, celebrated for his vivid storytelling and deep insight into British colonial India. Born in Bombay (now Mumbai), India, Kipling spent much of his early life immersed in Indian culture, which profoundly influenced his writing. He gained international fame for classics such as The Jungle Book, Just So Stories, and Kim, as well as for his poems like If— and Gunga Din. In 1907, he became the first English-language writer to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, recognized for his narrative genius and imaginative prose. Though his views on imperialism have sparked debate, Kipling’s works remain admired for their powerful storytelling, unforgettable characters, and deep sense of place, cementing his legacy as one of the most influential literary figures of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
