About the Author

Jyotirmoy Dey, popularly known as J. Dey, was one of India's most respected crime journalists and an acknowledged expert on the Mumbai underworld. He worked with major publications, including the Mid Day, where he served as Crime and Investigations Editor. Throughout his career, he extensively covered organized crime, gang wars, police operations, and the activities of notorious underworld figures. His deep network of sources among police officers, informers, and gangsters enabled him to write authoritative books such as Khallaas and Zero Dial: The Dangerous World of Informers. In June 2011, Dey was assassinated in Mumbai by motorcycle-borne gunmen, a crime that drew national attention and underscored the risks faced by investigative journalists covering organized crime. His work remains an important source for understanding the history and culture of Mumbai's underworld.
